 ABOUT THE ARTIST KNOWN AS 'BILLO' 

Bill O'Leary is a self taught artist and he's a very slow learner. His work has been described as 'outsider', 'art brut', 'raw' -  or the opposite to mainstream or fine art.  

 

"Outsider Art" is often applied to include self-taught or naive art makers who were

never trained or institutionalized. Typically, those labeled as Outsider Artists have little

or no contact with art institutions or the galleries in the mainstream art world.

Much that is labeled 'Outsider Art' illustrates extreme mental states, unconventional ideas, or elaborate fantasy worlds. 

Bill is drawn to the human form and the flawed human condition - so he draws from the well of opportunity in those departments right here in Phuket.

Don't worry - he hasn't entirely lost the plot. He's not cutting off an ear or painting the devil on a block of wood - not yet anyway...

Bill's desire to produce non-commercial outlandish art at this time in his life is a complete mystery to himself - and many others.

There's a lot of symbolism in his work. i.e. Most originals from mid 2008 have at least one '11:11', or anticlockwise Buddhist spirals and naughts and crosses doodles somewhere within the work.

This nude line painting above is a bit of a paradox.

It's the first time Billo' ever held a paintbrush on a canvas surface. This painting took about 2 minutes to complete. At the time, he thought nothing of it.

But since then, he's tried time and time again to reproduce these proportions.

So far, he's never recreated the perfection of these first drawn lines. Go figure.

This work is called "My First Oil Painting" and is currently the most liked and commented-about piece of all Billo's art on the Artbreak website.
